Traditional 23k Gold Leafing

Gold leaf is gold that is beaten into extremely thin sheets. Gold leaf is available in a wide variety of karats and shades. 23-karat gold is the most commonly used.

The gold used in the leafing that I do is from Florence, Italy, and is applied to yachts with gold leaf sizing. It is then burnished with sterile cotton at a 35 % angle. I then make small balls from dress velvet and put engine swirls in the burnished gold. The transom is then coated with several coats of clear Allgrip. After this process I can  then outline and shadow the gold and add a hailing port. The results are magnificent with a brilliant glittery shine that cannot be duplicated with any other product or process, as you will see in the photos.
